Guildford and the surrounding
area
Guildford translates
to ‘the golden ford’ and lies in a gap between
Dorking
and Farnham in the North Downs.
It is a county town of
many contrasts and has one of Surrey 's most attractive
High Streets, with the cobblestone road gently curving uphill.
Its most prominent feature
is the famous 16th century Guildhall with its golden
clock.
17th century Abbots Hospital almshouse, the Angel Hotel, Guildford
Museum
and the ruins of the 13th century castle are just a few of the
many historic buildings
in the town while Guildford Cathedral, the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre
and the
University of Surrey are three of Guildford's modern additions.
The town also offers
a wide variety of shopping experiences both within the
High Street, in the many cobbled alleyways, the shopping malls,
department stores and the busy street market.
Nearby, the River Wey
provides a restful interlude of locks, barges and waterfowl.
